Dorothy Dandridge (1922 – 1965): first African-American woman to be nominated for Best Actress Oscar (“Carmen Jones” 1954). On screen from 1935 in the Dandridge Sisters; cameo roles until MGM’s “Bright Road” 1952 opposite Harry Belafonte, followed by sporadic credits including “Porgy and Bess” 1959. Final credit: Empress Zaire in “Marco Polo” 1962.
