Lara Lindsay 1942 – 2023

Lara Lindsay: born Gladys Jacobs, 1 January 1942, Chicago Illinois. Three feature film credits: ‘The Sweet Ride’ (1968), ‘The Boston Strangler’ (1968) and ‘Logan’s Run’ (1976). Obituary after the jump.

Born Glady Irene Jacobs in Chicago, Illinois, in January 1939, she followed her icon Sonja Henie on to the ice at a young age, and in her teens was performing in the “Ice Capades” and other shows.

In her early 20s, she put her career ambitions on hold when she married interior designer Franz G. Lewis in 1962 (their son Gregory was born in 1963). The marriage didn’t last long though, and by mid-decade, she was putting her good looks to use doing TV commercials in Tuscan, Arizona, where she lived.

In 1966, she got a job as a stand-in for actress Charlotte Holt on the western “El Dorado”, starring John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and James Caan. Colleagues on set urged her to try her luck in Hollywood. She left the same year, changed her name to Lara Lindsay (Lara taken from the box-office hit, director David Lean’s “Dr. Zhivago”, and Lindsay, after her brother’s name). She went through extensive dental work too to get that ‘perfect Hollywood smile’, which seemed to pay off when she was signed to 20th-Century-Fox in 1967.

Lara made her film debut with a minor bit as a model in the title credits of the action-adventure comedy, “In Like Flint” (1967), starring James Coburn as a super sleuth Derek Flint equipped to take on a cabal of women plotting to take over the world. She followed this with “The Sweet Ride”, starring Anthony Franciosa and Michael Sarrazin, and played Bobbie Eden in “The Boston Strangler” (both 1968), with Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda.

By the 1970s, with her career going nowhere, she tried her luck working behind the scenes, eventually working as assistant to producer Saul David, who personally gave her a part in “Logan’s Run” (1976), as The Woman Runner.

It also proved to be her swansong. In 1984, she married Howard P. Ladd and settled in Florida.
